As a huge fan of strong hot cocoa (possibly the most hyggelig of hot drinks), I often find that those wooden chocolate teaspoons for stirring into a cup of hot milk never seem to pack enough of a punch. The answer therefore struck me that not only was a much larger spoon needed, but that the addition of some espresso powder might make a lovely mocha. Vintage dessert spoons can be purchased very cheaply from vintage markets and charity shops, and I think that a selection of pretty silver handles looks wonderful poking out from ribbon and parchment if you are wondering what to put in a DIY Christmas hygge gift hamper… and if you are in the mood for chocolate, check out our best ever chocolate chip cookies, chocolate salami (a fabulous edible gift recipe), or maybe our kladkakka recipe, a super easy and very gooey Swedish cake, perfect for fika!
Materials
6 vintage EPNS dessert spoons
Ingredients
200g dark chocolate
40g white chocolate
6 teaspoons of espresso powder (if you wish to make mocha rather than plain hot chocolate)
Chocolate sprinkles, butterscotch chips etc to decorate
A few drops of vegetable oil
Baking parchment
Ribbon
- Wash and dry the spoons thoroughly.
- Lay out a piece of baking parchment on your work surface, and then find a large hardback book and prop the spoon handles on it so the bowls are lying horizontally; this will stop the chocolate pouring out as soon as you put it in.
- Melt the dark chocolate over a bain marie or in the microwave. Put the espresso powder into a small bowl and stir in six teaspoons of the melted chocolate until it is thoroughly combined.
- Divide the mixture between the dessert spoons, then carefully spoon over the rest of the melted chocolate to cover it and fill the bowls.
- Sprinkle over your chocolate stars, butterscotch chips, etc. If you wish to drizzle them with white chocolate, stir a couple of drops of vegetable oil into it once melted, and then dribble it across with a fork.
- Leave them in a cool room for a few hours to set.
- Cut six rectangles of parchment measuring one and a half times the length of the spoon and four times the width.
- Fold the paper in thirds widthways, and then againin half so it makes a little bag.
- Pop the spoon in between the folds and tie with a pretty ribbon and pack into your home-made hygge hamper.
